The word "rune" means "wisdom" or "secret". They were believed to be a gift from the norse god Odin. Runic inscriptions are the oldest original documents in Swedish and was created sometime around 100 A.D., probably with the Latin alphabet as a model. Even that runes from the beginning were found throughout the whole Germanic language area, it was in Scandinavia that they developed the most, widespreadused from the earliest time. The Latin alphabet is named after the first two letters, Alpha and Beta. The runic alphabet is called futhark after the six first letters: F, U, TH, A, R, and K. There are two types of runics, the norse that has 24 characters and was used until about 800 A.D., and a 16 character futhark which was then in use, about the same time as the Viking Age began.
